UP WINS 2ND EDITION OF BANDS ALIVE

30TH JUNE, 2009

The female lead Band, UP pulled a major upset to win the ultimate prize in this year’s edition of the live band music competition, Bands Alive. They were able to clinch victory from the highly tipped to win, KTK Band, pushing them to second, followed by Vision Band and HM Band in that order.

The four bands each pulled out amazing performances on the night with two rounds of competition. They opened with self-compositions and climaxed it with classic oldies in the second round. Apart from UP Band which performed a Kontihene song, all other three bands performed Western oldies.

In the first round of the competition, the four bands did a song composed by themselves. KTK took the challenge to perform'Fa wo ho bo Nyame' and 'Synthetic world' originally performed by Jimmy Cliff.

Followed was HM who did 'Sanba' and 'Holiday/ Aint no stopping us now', a song originally done by Madonna/ Mcfadene Whitehead. Then UP mounted the stage to do 'Sakawa love' and 'Krohenkro' originally performed by Nana Kontehene. 'My heart for you/ Medi makoma ama wo' and 'Let's have good time/ Land of thousand voices', a song originally done by Kool & the Gang & Oyis Redding.

After the two rounds of competition, it appeared that KTK and Vision topped the night and were the favourites of the huge crowed that gathered in the auditorium of the National Theatre to witness the finale to the 14week thriller.

At the end of the night, KTK topped on the judges’ scorecards, followed by Vision, UP and HM in that order. However, when the public votes were added, the tables were turned completely. This triggered disapprovals from majority of the crowd, raising questions about the credibility of the show.

On the night of the finale, the Judges carried 50% of the decision making process while the public decided the rest. The stage kept blazing when one of the music directors that helped grommed the bands during their stay in the competition, Bessa Simons made audience feel the thrill as he had the opportunity to perform some of his tracks.

UP won a full set of musical instruments, 2,000GHc, and a recording contract with MTN, the title sponsors. KTK won a set of musical instruments and 1,000 GHc, Vision won 3,000 GHc and HM won 2,000 GHc.

The Judges comprising Rex Omar, Prince Mydas and Mark Tonto were around to do their usual thing. The dynamic presenter KKD also added more flavour to the show. It was really a memorable night for the fans who trooped in the National Theatre to witness the event live.
