| Greater Accra NPP Boss In Trouble |
 A report circulated on Monday July 26, 2010 by presidential aspirant Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign team said the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Hon. Ishmael Ashittey has declared that constituency chairmen in the Greater Accra Region have met and taken a unanimous decision to throw their weight behind Nana Akufo-Addo, one of the five aspirants in the upcoming August 7 primaries of the party.
According to the report, Mr Ashittey stressed that the decision to support Nana Akufo-Addo is not my personal decision but a collective decision that we took together as chairmen of the region and which I have been asked to convey to delegates seated here today.
With this declaration, Nana Akufo-Addo has more or less been declared winner in advance of the polls in just a little over a week’s time.
For the avoidance of doubt, the regional chairman said he chose to declare this collective support for Nana Akufo-Addo here in Tema East because he is a member of that particular constituency and the Greater Accra Regional executives under his leadership held a meeting and agreed to call for an early congress which the party agreed to do.
Nana Akufo-Addo, declared Mr. Ashittey, is the one who can win the power for the party in 2012 because everywhere we got with the party’s message, the people tell us that Nana Akufo Addo is their preferred choice and he should be returned as flag bearer for the 2012 elections.
Adding his voice to the call, Sheik I. C. Quaye, a former Greater Accra Regional Minister and member of the campaign team also declared that When Greater Accra speaks for you, you know victory is yours.
No doubt bolstered by the encouraging words from the greater Accra Region Chairman, Nana Akufo Addo said Greater Accra is indeed a great region, and I am very much impressed with the outpour of love and support that I have enjoyed since I began my tour of the region.
But Mr. Ashittey’s declaration of support and Nana Akufo-Addo’s elation may yet end up in major confusion that could threaten the NPP’s survival.
Already, a call has gone out for the Sanction of the Grater Accra chairman for his open backing for Nana. In a press release following the Greater Accra decision a party supporter, who may or may not be representing the voice of the 4 other aspirants (Gang of 4) said, I view with great concern, statements attributed to the Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the Greater Accra Region that can foment the rather peaceful atmosphere we are currently enjoying towards the August 7th congress to elect the leader and flag bearer of our dear party.
These loose comments, to say the least are unfortunate and have the tendency of further polarizing the Party. The Regional Chairman has shown that he cannot serve as a referee in the upcoming elections and his actions clearly show his lack of leadership qualities in the management of the party in the region especially in the lead up to the congress.
The complainant, Caroline Asare has therefore called on the national executive committee of the party to immediately sanction the regional Chairman and all the constituency chairmen he claimed he met at the said meeting. The comments by the chairman clearly violates the rule and regulations for aspiring presidential candidates.
